Dine at Donna Chang

Donna Chang is a seriously excellent option for complementing that wonderfully invigorating, chic visit to the city. Located just behind Queen St Mall’s southern border on George St and housed in a magnificent heritage listed Art Deco style building, simply walking through the leadlight and glass doors, across the foyer panelled in dark wood and into the high ceiling mezzanined dining area of white embossed ceilings and walls, plush velvet seating and lush greenery foretells of a pretty special dining experience.

Yes, Donna Chang delivers on the style front, but what of the food? Combining Sichuan flavours and authentic Cantonese cuisine, this Modern Chinese menu is just unfamiliar enough to be interesting, but not so alien that you’ve no idea what you’re eating. And it’s all executed in a decidedly high-end style rather than a cheap and cheerful Wednesday night takeout vibe or dim sum dining hall.

For a mid-shop lunch, try the Scallop and prawn wontons with aged black vinegar and coriander for starters before moving on to Donna Chang duck pancakes or Char siu roast pork neck with rockmelon blossom, honey and tamari. Wash it down with a very reasonably priced glass of wine or surprising cocktail. An Express set menu is excellent for those who need to get back to the Sale racks.

Dinner is an elegant affair, with Banquet options listed under ‘Favourite’ or ‘Deluxe’ sure to please with nine different dishes and accompaniments as well as an extensive al a carte menu. Old favourites like fried caramel ice cream and new options such as Kung pao QLD tiger prawns with dried chillies, macadamias, garlic stems and Sichuan peppercorns or Wagyu scotch fillet MBS7 with kampot pepper sauce are featured. Presented beautifully, this is a fantastic option for those seeking to keep the chic in the city feeling alive. Best of all, Donna Chang is only a short Uber or bus ride over the river from Gabba Central Apartments.
